Commentary
The simplest macromolecule, a polymer of ethylene.
It is classified as follows based on the polymer structure.
- HDPE (high density PE): Linear, with few short side chains, resulting in high density
- LDPE (low density PE): Many long side chains, resulting in bulkiness and low density
- LLDPE (linear low density PE): Linear, with many short side chains (density is between HDPE and LDPE)
- HMWPE (ultra-high molecular weight PE): Molecular weight increased to 1 million or more
Key points
- Low specific gravity (1 or less)
- Good characteristics at low-temperature, often used in film for food packaging.
- Poor dimensional stability, so unsuitable for precision applications

Polyethylene tanks

Reason for adoption
Good at kerosene resistance, High impact resistance even in cold environments.
Polyethylene bags

Reason for adoption
Good properties with thinner film (Good at infration molding prosess, impact strength etc.,)
Electrical wire coating

Reason for adoption
Good at electrical performance (electrical insulation, low dielectric constant), lightweight (low specific gravity)
