Overcoming the 2024 Logistics Challenges: Insights from Frontline Staff Members

The "2024 Logistics Challenges," highlighted by a shortage of drivers in Japan, have long been a challenge for our company. Observing trucks with unused space and questioning how to eliminate waste and enhance transportation efficiency led to a groundbreaking proposal from our team.

"Could we negotiate with customers A and B to consolidate their deliveries into a single truck?"

This was the beginning of our consolidation project.

Reducing Driver Burdens Through Our Proposed Solutions

“If we take the initiative and propose our adjusted plan, would it be possible to consolidate multiple deliveries to a minimum?”

With this question in mind, the team challenged the standard practice of fulfilling customer orders precisely as requested.

At the start of the consolidation project, the team was uncertain whether such a proposal would be accepted or perceived as unsolicited advice. Nevertheless, we gained the customers' understanding by showcasing the benefits of optimized delivery schedules, quantities, and transportation methods.

For example, the Customer Support Section shares insights from warehouse and transport meetings led by the Logistics Section. This collaboration helps us understand the overall logistics situation and develop measures to address our challenges. Based on the understanding gained, we adjust and negotiate order conditions to align customer requests with our capabilities.

Through this consolidation project, we have reduced logistics burdens, CO2 emissions, and approximately 3% (equivalent to 180 hours annually) of the team’s workload for the 2023 fiscal year. The results so far have exceeded our expectations.

The Supply Chain Management Department Integrates Procurement, Order Management, and Logistics for Enhanced Efficiency

By consolidating the procurement of raw materials, order management, and logistics functions within a single organization—the Supply Chain Management Department—new synergies have emerged, leading to increased efficiency and a more bonded team.

We view the Customer Support Section as a crucial link in the supply chain. With the resilience to connect parties and the flexibility to address request gaps, we strive to bridge these gaps in unique ways. This initiative is just the beginning.

Moving forward, we will continue to engage with customers through proactive suggestions (sometimes seen as overly helpful), aiming to enhance relationships and implement initiatives that are both people- and planet-friendly.
