Hayashibara Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shimoishii, Kita-ku, Okayama; Representative Director: Naoki Yasuba), a member of the NAGASE Group, confirms that seven of our personal care ingredients that we develop, manufacture, and sell are biodegradable* and are environmentally friendly.
Our personal care ingredients were theoretically assumed to be biodegradable due to their raw materials and structure. To demonstrate evidence-based biodegradability, we have now commissioned an external international testing laboratory to conduct an analysis for all seven ingredients.
Having reaffirmed that these are environmentally friendly ingredients, we plan to proactively advance our sales activities of these ingredients as products that can be widely used in the personal care product market, which sees great demand for sustainable ingredients with a low environmental footprint.
*Biodegradable: The capacity of a substance to be broken down by microorganisms into inorganic compounds after it has been discharged into the environment, such as into the soil, rivers, or the ocean.
Personal care products such as skin care, body care, and hair care products, as well as soaps are essential to our daily lives, but as domestic wastewater is discharged through hand washing and bathing, these products can be harmful to nature and the creatures living in rivers and oceans. Since these products are used every day, the ingredients used in them are required to have exceptional functionality and to not negatively impact living creatures or the natural environment in terms of sustainability; therefore, the importance of biodegradability—the ability to quickly breakdown in the environment, such as in soil, rivers, and oceans—has been drawing attention. The number of personal care products promoting this is increasing every year and biodegradability is expected to become a standard for raw material registration and adoption by manufacturers in the future.
Given these conditions, we commissioned an analysis of seven of our personal care ingredients (AA2G™, Alpha Glucosyl Hesperidin, Glucosyl Naringin, TREHALOSE 100, PULLULAN (COSMETIC GRADE), Lissenare™, and MG-60) by an externally certified international testing laboratory, which determined that they are readily biodegradable, allowing us to definitively demonstrate evidence-based biodegradability.
Having reaffirmed that these are environmentally friendly ingredients, we will proactively promote sales activities to expand awareness of the ingredients in the personal care product market and contribute to a sustainable society through the development and production of sustainable ingredients.

Analysis was commissioned to an externally certified laboratory and conducted in accordance with OECD test guidelines. 60% or more biodegradation indicates that the substance rapidly breakdowns in the environment, i.e., “Readily biodegradable.”
